    This course provides the basic understanding of steel classification, application of heat treatment to develop desired mechanical properties and material testing.

  • course learning outcomes:

    At the end of the course, the participants will be able to;
    - Identify steels and its alloys according to steel designation (AISI, ASTM, trade names).
    - Learn the different heat treatment processes.
    - Solve process/product problems where heat treatment is involved in the manufacturing steel industry.
    - Design and application of correct heat treatment process for different products.
    - Use of quality control measures such as quantitative metallography, tensile testing, impact testing, hardness testing and fatigue testing.

  • Course outlines:

    - Fe-C phase diagram; Metallurgical phase in steels.
    - Steel types: structural, low alloy and tool steels.
    - Heat treatment processes: Annealing, Normalizing, Hardening, Tempering and Stress relieving.
    - Surface hardening of steels.
    - Hardenability, CCT and TTT diagrams.
    - Metallographic quality control.
    - Mechanical testing of heat treated products (Hardness Test, Impact Test, Fatigue Test, and Tensile Test).
    - Non-destructive testing (PT and MT) of heat treated products.
