SPFS 023 : Hazard Materials & Control “Awareness“

  • course description:

    This course provide skills to recognize, detect, and identify the presence of hazardous materials. It describe how hazardous materials are classified; understand the risks associated with them and proper notification procedures: Understanding the importance of initiating command and control activities during a hazardous materials incident/emergency by identifying the containment systems and materials involved, and use of the Emergency Response Guidebook. The curriculum defines hazardous materials, and describes the roles, responsibilities and risks associated with all types of hazard.

  • course learning outcomes:

    At the end of the course, the participants will be able to;
    - Identify hazardous materials/risks and know role/limitations.
    - Identify types and locations of hazardous materials.
    - Identify materials using placards/labels using the Emergency Response Guidebook ERG.
    - Identify common resources and use shipping papers and SDS to aid in identification.
    - Understand OSHA, NFPA, & EPA training requirements.
    - Understand the role & limitations of the awareness level first responder.
    - Identify common security issues & terrorism indicators and know what actions to take when responding to threats.
